Year 6 Health Session: Growing Up

Our Year 6 students recently participated in a morning of engaging and informative puberty and wellbeing sessions designed to support them as they navigate this important stage of growing up.

In this session, students were broken up into boys and girl’s groups where they could feel safe and comfortable to learn and respond. The girls started their session with a fun interactive True or False game. This activity helped students challenge common myths, test their knowledge and build confidence in discussing topics related to growing up.

Mrs. Spurling our Wellbeing Officer then led a session on friendships where she discussed creating a village of friends so we don’t rely on one person for everything. Next, they had Nurse Meeya who provided valuable information about the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during puberty. Students listened attentively, asked thoughtful questions and gained a deeper understanding of how to care for their health and wellbeing.

The boys began their session on the sports field working as a team and focusing on their sportsmanship. They then enjoyed making healthy smoothies and learning about nutritious food choices that support growing bodies. A highlight was the boys’ shaving experience. Students were introduced to basic shaving techniques in a safe and supportive environment, helping them understand personal grooming and hygiene practices that may become part of their daily routines in the future. Using paddle pop sticks and shaving cream, the boys had some laughs playing the ‘barber.’

One of the most valuable aspects of the program was the opportunity for deeper conversations in a respectful and supportive setting. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts and discuss topics that are sometimes difficult to talk about. These discussions helped foster understanding, confidence and respect for themselves and others.

The sessions were a wonderful opportunity for our Year 6 students to develop knowledge, life skills and healthy habits that will support them as they continue their journey into adolescence. We are incredibly proud of the maturity, curiosity and respectful participation shown by all students throughout the program.

Thank you to our visiting nurse and staff who helped make these learning experiences both meaningful and memorable for our Year 6 students. We look forward to continuing to support our students as they grow into confident, healthy and informed young people.
