Celebrating Literacy and a Love of Reading Through Book Week

At Groves Christian College, we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is a love of reading. While learning to read is an essential foundation for academic success, our vision extends beyond teaching students how to read words on a page. We are committed to fostering a genuine passion for reading that inspires curiosity, imagination, lifelong learning, and well-being.

Did you know that reading with your child for just 10 minutes each day can expose them to more than 600,000 words over the course of a year? Simple, consistent reading habits have a profound impact on children’s vocabulary, comprehension, communication skills, and overall academic achievement. More importantly, these shared moments help establish a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

Throughout the year, students across the Primary school have been immersed in rich literacy experiences designed to nurture confident, capable, and enthusiastic readers. From shared reading and classroom novel studies to author explorations, discussions, and independent reading opportunities, our students have continually engaged with stories that challenge, inspire, and delight.

These efforts culminated in last week’s vibrant Book Week celebrations, where our school community came together to honour the power of stories and the joy that books bring to our lives.

A highlight of the week was undoubtedly the much-anticipated Book Character Parades. Students enthusiastically transformed into beloved book characters, bringing favourite stories to life through creativity, imagination, and a wonderful sense of fun. From timeless classics to contemporary favourites, the range of characters reflected the diverse reading interests of our students and provided a visual reminder of the many worlds that books allow us to explore.

Our Foundation Phase students proudly showcased their costumes, delighting families and staff alike. Equally impressive were our Intermediate Phase students, whose thoughtful character choices and creative costume designs demonstrated their favourite books and characters as a powerful reminder of why reading matters.

As students progress through their schooling journey and eventually into secondary education, academic demands increase and recreational reading can often compete with busy schedules and growing screen time. Yet strong literacy skills remain the cornerstone of success across every learning area. Whether interpreting scientific information, analysing historical sources, solving mathematical problems, or communicating ideas clearly and effectively, literacy underpins all learning.

Events such as Book Week remind us that reading is far more than an academic skill. Reading opens doors to new worlds, broadens horizons, develops empathy, strengthens critical thinking, and nurtures creativity. Children who read for pleasure are not only building literacy skills but also developing habits that support lifelong learning and personal growth.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our families for their enthusiastic support of Book Week. The effort invested in costumes, the encouragement shown at home, and the partnership families provide in fostering positive reading habits make a significant difference in our students’ learning journeys. We also acknowledge our dedicated staff, whose passion for literacy continues to create classrooms where books are celebrated and reading is valued every day.

As we reflect on a wonderful week of celebration, we are reminded that every story read, every page turned, and every conversation sparked by a book contributes to shaping confident learners and thoughtful young people. Together, let us continue to encourage our children to pick up a book, discover new adventures, and experience the joy that only reading can bring.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss.
