Our Term 3 Middle Phase Study Day brought science to life through a range of engaging chemistry and physics activities that encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving.

The day began with our now familiar outdoor Morning Tea, providing students with time to reconnect with friends and enjoy conversation in a relaxed setting. Parents also had the opportunity to meet each other or catch up before the learning activities commenced. Following this, students gathered for a devotion led by Distance Education Director, Mrs Jeffrey, who encouraged everyone to reflect on the importance of growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ and living out their faith in everyday life.

Our first session challenged students to put their observation and memory skills to the test with a laboratory equipment icebreaker. Working in groups, students carefully studied a collection of scientific equipment before trying to recall as many items as possible.

Students then moved into practical investigations tailored to their year levels. Year 7 students completed a filtration experiment as part of their assessment work. Meanwhile, Years 8 and 9 students undertook a sand-and-salt separation experiment, carefully extracting and collecting their specimens in small bottles to take home. Through these investigations, students gained a deeper understanding of physical and chemical processes while developing valuable laboratory skills.

After a short break, students were treated to several exciting science demonstrations. Mr Norris captivated the audience with demonstrations that showcased fascinating scientific principles, including the classic flying teabag experiment and an impressive bottle rocket powered by liquid nitrogen. These demonstrations sparked plenty of questions and discussions as students tried to explain the science behind what they observed.

Lunch was once again a highlight of the day, with students enjoying a delicious catered meal together. Shared meals provide valuable opportunities for students to strengthen friendships, connect with teachers, and enjoy the sense of community that makes these study days so special.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to physics as students explored the world of electrical circuits. Through hands-on investigations, students learned about the flow of electricity and the components required to create functioning circuits. Students demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills as they worked through challenges and experimented with different circuit configurations. The session provided a way to reinforce key concepts being studied this term while encouraging collaboration and critical thinking.

Throughout the day, students embraced every opportunity to participate, investigate, and support one another. Whether separating mixtures, observing scientific demonstrations, building circuits, or simply connecting with friends, the enthusiasm and engagement displayed by everyone made the day a tremendous success.

As students explored the laws and patterns of the physical world, they were also reminded that creation reflects the wisdom, order, and creativity of God, encouraging us to continue learning about the world He has made with wonder and gratitude.

Middle Phase Study Days are held in Week 5 of each term, and we look forward to welcoming students back for another exciting day of hands-on learning and discovery next term.

Jenny Takada
Middle Phase Distance Education Teacher

View Gallery on Pixevety

It’s always a pleasure to see our Distance Education students come together for a day of learning, friendship, and discovery.
