On Wednesday, 19 August, the Groves Intermediate Wakakirri Team proudly performed at the Logan Entertainment Centre (LEC) as part of the Wakakirri Story-Dance Competition.
This year’s performance, Ned Kelly: Hero or Villain?, was a powerful historical retelling of the life of one of Australia’s most controversial figures. Through an engaging combination of dance, drama, and storytelling, students explored the complexities of Ned Kelly’s legacy and invited the audience to consider both sides of the debate.
Months of dedication, rehearsals, creativity, and teamwork culminated in an outstanding performance that was recognised with an impressive collection of awards:
- Storytelling Award for a Great Story
- Ensemble Award for Dancing and Acting
- Stage Managers Award for Teamwork and Backstage Crew
- Production Award for Sets, Props and Costumes
- Storytelling Award for Great Use of Drama
The performance also received glowing praise from Emma Whitefield, Wakakirri Judge and Ambassador, who described the production as:
“An iconic piece of Australian history retold with artistry.”
This wonderful feedback reflects the commitment and talent demonstrated by every student involved in the production. From the performers on stage to the backstage crew working behind the scenes, each member of the team played a vital role in bringing the story to life.
We are incredibly proud of how hard the students worked throughout the rehearsal process. Their enthusiasm, perseverance, and teamwork were evident in every aspect of the performance and contributed significantly to the success they achieved on the night.
As we celebrate these achievements, we now eagerly await news on whether Ned Kelly: Hero or Villain? has progressed to the Wakakirri Showcase Final, which will be held in September.
A special thank you goes to Mrs Nugent, Mrs Koleits, Mrs Smith, Mrs Biasillo, and Mr Walker for their countless hours of work building sets, sewing costumes, choreographing routines, and supporting students throughout the entire production process. Their dedication and expertise helped transform a creative vision into an award-winning performance.
