In English this term, Year 8 students are preparing to give informative speeches to their classmates. As a preliminary exercise the students have engaged in mini-debates in class to develop their confidence to speak in front of a large group, to learn to sequence their ideas logically and to identify what makes a speech successful. The students enjoyed preparing and presenting their arguments against their classmates, debating statements that included, “Pets should not be allowed in apartments,”, “Money is the root of all evil,”, and “All animal testing should be banned.” . We then identified and discussed the elements of an effective speech and an ineffective speech to create a checklist for the students’ reference.
It was encouraging to hear students speak with so much confidence, passion, and thoughtfulness.
