As we draw near to the end of the term, students and staff are anticipating the upcoming two-week break. Classes are continuing to engage in lessons and most Year 1 and Year 2 students are completing their DRA reading assessment with their classroom teacher.
Next week, on Thursday, June 25, Foundation Phase will be having their school photos taken. Due to restrictions gradually being lifted, we will now be having class photos as well as individual photos taken. Please ensure that your child’s uniform does not have any visible stains or tears in them and their hair and jewellery meet the college uniform standard. On the day of photos, it is important that your child brings their completed photo order form to school, as they will be required to pass these directly to the photographer before their photo is taken. For more information, please refer to the school photo day blog in our college news.
As we continue to promote student engagement in the Premier’s Reading challenge, we encourage parents to read daily with their child. In last week’s blog, the suggestion was given to ask your child to retell the story they had read. If your child is able to give you a detailed retelling, you can start asking them questions while they are reading, encouraging them to deepen their knowledge of the text.
Some questions you can ask are;
• Why do you think the character did that?
• What do you think will happen next?
• Does this book remind you of anything else you’ve already read or seen?
By asking these questions you are encouraging your child to engage with the text and develop in their understanding of literacy.
