Good foundations in Foundation

Groves Christian College maintains small communities within our College-community by operating as Phases within each School, within the College. This structure is explained as Our Learning Journey, with each phase characterised by developmentally-appropriate qualities. Foundation Phase aims to Acquire and Explore:

  • Acquiring the foundations of literacy, numeracy and successful learning habits through age appropriate activities.
  • Exploring the learning connections between everyday experiences and structured knowledge through lively learning.
  • Developing the ability to trust others and a hopeful resiliency to deal with the reality of life.

As we progress further into Term Two, students are fully immersed in their learning, developing their knowledge and understanding within academic and social-emotional areas. Social and emotional capabilities are highly influential in a child’s learning journey at school and beyond, which is why hope and resilience are such vital priorities even in these early years of learning.

Our aim is to guide and support each student in pursuing the purpose they were destined for, now and into eternity, and equipping our students to be resilient learners who face each situation with a positive approach. While resilience can be challenging for some students, with the assistance of our teachers, School Chaplain, and peer mentors, Groves students strive to become resilient learners and succeed in life.

One instance where our students are presently displaying their skills in perseverance and resilience is the NAPLAN Online testing, which will continue into next week. Healthy breakfasts and good sleep help them arrive physically ready, and we have been keeping all students in our prayers so they may do their best in each NAPLAN component. This annual activity is helpful for us as a school to ensure we shape our curriculum to support our students, but we avoid pressure that will undermine the resilience of our students. Their worth and future is more than any testing can tell them, as we know God has placed unique potential and purpose in each child.

Another annual event which showcases a different aspect of their individuality and requires different expressions of resilience is our Foundation Grandparents Day in Week 6. We are looking forward to honouring these incredible role models who have journeyed through life with resilience and are significant people who positively impact the lives of our students.

Throughout all the seasons of the school year, all the years of learning, and all the opportunities to celebrate the diverse strengths of your children, our overall hope is that students at Groves are learning that the truest hope and strength for life’s challenges is found in God.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
