In Week 1 this term, the Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students went to the Supreme and District Courts of Queensland. While there, we witnessed a variety of different criminal cases. We had the opportunity to watch the Australian legal system in action, specifically in sentencing and trial court proceedings.
One sentencing trial was particularly helpful in understanding the balance of rehabilitation, deterrence and retribution in delivering appropriate consequences for a criminal action. This provided many students with primary information in regards to our current assessment topic on criminal issues in the law. The visit provided insight into the practice and application of criminal law in the real world.
We left with a new sense of understanding of how the law serves in maintaining a peaceful and safe society while endeavouring to uphold justice.
