Head of College – 2018, Term 2, Week 1

Over the next week Australia and New Zealand communities will commemorate the Anzacs. At Groves Christian College we will hold our ANZAC Day commemoration service on Monday morning to remember the sacrifice of our fellow Australians and New Zealanders in our defence. Sadly, human sinful decisions (e.g. greed and pride) continue to cause conflict that results in war. War causes death, destruction, and dismay. We abhor war, but we honour everyone who has been willing to defend us and the liberty we enjoy. It is normal practice for the following ode (poem), titled “The Ode” to be read at commemoration services.

Their glory shall never die,

the whole wide world

Is their Sepulchre (tomb).

Their epitaph is written in the

Hearts of all mankind

and where ever there is talk

Of noble deeds their names will be held

in grateful Remembrance.

They shall grow not old,

as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them

nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun

and in the morning

We shall remember them.

Lest we forget!

The Ode is part of a longer poem written by Laurence Binyon after the commencement of World War One in 1914 (source Australian Army).

In addition to our own service, student representatives will march in the Logan Central ANZAC Day march. Other students who wish to march on the day may join our representatives. Please see details on the news blog.

God bless,
