Literacy Programs

This year in Prep, the students have been using Sound Waves and I Love Reading (ILR) programs to help develop their phonemic awareness and teach them the skills to sound out and read words. To read and write, students need to be familiar with sounds so they can apply them when sounding out written words. Each day, selected sounds are taught through a variety of activities such as rhyme, songs, actions, and games.

Students will also bring home a list of flash words to practise. The flash words from the ILR program will be coded. The colours and numbers help the children identify the sounds and eliminate guesswork. We encourage you to make flash cards out of the words. Teaching the flash words in random order is beneficial since students do not rely on the placement of words to read accurately. We thank you for your continued support.
